What we do at Pre-School
We provide resources and activities for all areas of the Montessori curriculum:
Through these we meet the criteria set by the Early Years Foundation Stage. Materials for these areas are available in the classroom at all times, so if you were to venture into our pre-school you would see some children tracing letters in the sand tray, while others may be building with the Pink Tower or Broad Stair. There may be someone painting a 'masterpiece' at the easel, with another snuggled up in the book corner having a story read to them. You might also see a group of children chatting whilst having a drink and some fruit - which they would have served themselves - at the snack table. You would also see them go and wash up their cup and bowl after they had finished. In keeping with Montessori principles we don't have a rigid daily timetable, but during the course of the morning there will be opportunities for the children to work independently and in groups, to relax, play, go outside, have a story and do some singing or drama. Each child has the freedom to choose to do all or some of these. The Teacher's RoleThe Montessori teacher is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the classroom. It is important to add new activities at appropriate times to support the children's learning and interests. This is achieved through careful observation and planning. Each teacher is responsible for a group of children - she is their key worker. She is the person who meets with the child's parents during the settling-in process to explain how the pre-school operates and her role. She plans for each child on an individual basis and keeps records and observations so that she can help each child to progress and develop at its own pace. All of the teachers contribute towards planning group activities for all the children. BEE BooksWhen they join the pre-school, each child is provided with a BEE (Bring Everything Everyday) book. It contains sections for taking work home, newsletters and most importantly a page where both the teacher and the parent can write about what the child has done at pre-school and home. This helps to provide continuity of care and the opportunity to work in partnership for the good of the child. Of course, this does not replace face-to-face communication at the beginning and end of the session. You will be most welcome to come and visit our pre-school during one of our sessions - just contact us to arrange a suitable date and time.
